Glamping Consultant Sarah Riley Highlights a “Tourism Turnaround”

I’ve been immersed in hospitality services, glamping and marketing for over 20 years previously jointly managing a 5* boutique hospitality business. Offering coaching, private consultancy and business advice, I hope to inspire other people to achieve their dreams of a successful, unique holiday rental.

I’m deeply passionate about the industry and the great outdoors. Despite working hard spinning the two companies I have founded; Inspired Camping and Inspired Courses, as a family we are most at home in the great outdoors and love to escape to the wilderness, foraging for wild foods and hidden treasures when we can!

Why is ‘glamping’ so perfectly placed in the holiday market?

The #TourismTurnaround is about the recovery of the holiday industry after the Covid-19 pandemic. Not surprisingly, due to the current global situation and associated travel restrictions, the “Staycation’ trend has gradually increased in popularity throughout 2020. A staycation is a period of vacation when an individual or family participates in leisure activities and short-term stays within driving distance of their home.

Thankfully, in recent years the local hospitality industry has really stepped up a gear, offering more choice, higher standards and greater flexibility, and the glamping industry specifically is perfectly placed to recover well and continue to confidently operate during an unstable economy.

What are the advantages of a staycation?

Travelling is essential for all vacations, but if you could keep it to a minimum, why wouldn’t you? Long haul flights, lengthy stopovers and transits all use up precious time that could be added onto your break. Thus resulting in rest - not stress!

Air travel alone can cause huge amounts of undue stress. Having to remember passports & tickets, worrying about the weight of a suitcase and what liquids might be lurking at the bottom of your hand luggage and now the added complexities of border restrictions and adhering to Covid procedures, etc. are increasingly tiring. It seems much more appealing to just load some bags into the car and choose some great tunes for the short drive to your rest and recovery destination.

Choices have increased and the explosion of exciting places to stay, fueled by platforms such as Airbnb, are appealing to holidaymakers looking for more of a “home from home” experience or an alternative bespoke adventure. Although it may not feel like it, we’ve had a run of relatively good summers, weather-wise, and when you can get a tan in Cornwall, why bother flying to the Canaries?

Distancing and socialising in outside spaces has now become a part of the ‘new norm’, yet that is something already built into the very nature of glamping. Glamping provides a luxury, unique, and close-to-nature experience. Secluded and at peace, you are able to reconnect with nature and reap the health benefits of being outdoors and enjoying quality family time.
